Marist releases out-of-conference schedule

The Marist Athletics Department unveiled the Red Foxes competition for the 2009-2010 season.
Marist will open the season against Rutgers on Nov. 14, one year to the day that the two teams opened up last season as part of the Garden State Tournament. Marist suffered a two-point loss at the RAC last season.
The Red Foxes open up with four straight road games, which in my opinion, is a brilliant piece of schedule making. Marist is an entirely different team from last year and a long road trip can build chemistry and form a bond.
Marist will host the home opener on Saturday, Dec. 12, against Boston University. Binghamton, Vermont, and Princeton also journey to the McCann Center.
The schedule is solid from a competition standpoint. It's hard to predict wins and losses when there will be so many new faces in the Marist lineup, but it would have made no sense to schedule a team like Memphis again following a last place finish in a mid-major conference. All of the games should be competitive, and Marist should be well prepared for its MAAC schedule.

"Brilliant"? Realistic and incremental is more like it. It also seems to be back loaded to make sure Drummond gets as many games in as possible after the fall finals.

I'm sure this isn't the schedule the staff envisioned for year two of their program. It is just not that attractive. But to be fair, I'm sure not to many fans of Marist's opponents got a chill of excitement when they saw the Red Foxes on their schedule.

The good new is the staff have their own players in place and can more fully implement their system. Marist fans can now begin to see what these guys are gonna be all about, and lots of times unwrapping the present sometimes is half the fun.

I'm not sure I get your Drummond comment. He's going to miss every one of the these games. Whether Marist was playing all Big East opponents or high school teams, he's not playing regardless. He will play the MAAC portion of the schedule, where they will really need him.

It is a realistic schedule, but I was referring to the 4 away games they open up with. Coaches always say road trips bring a team closer together, and considering this team has huge turnover, this makes sense.

I also wouldn't say the staff didn't envision this. Martin was hired so late in the signing peiod, this was really his first chance to fully scout and bring in the talent he wanted. We'll see how it works out.

My understanding is that Drummond has to sit one semester. That should make him eligible for the home game against Binghamton on 12/22. I assume Marist will use their academic, rather than the 12 month calendar to determine when the semester is over.

Heck, come to think of it, the final day of fall classes is 12/11. Why not 12/12 vs BU. That is why I say it's back loaded, to get him as much game action as possible before the league schedule begins. Princeton in Jan. 6th. They may have played 3 MAAC games by then. that is pretty late.

Gonna be fun, again.

Although your reasoning is sound, you never know with the NCAA. Louie McCroskey missed the first 3 games of the 2007-08 season because of paperwork issues. I'm not 100% sure how the NCAA treats these issues. I'm going to look into it. I don't think Marist has any say whether he begins competition when the academic calendar ends in December or in mid-January.

Excellent, and thanks for taking the time to blog on Marist Basketball.

Martin and company's players and system are a departure from the past for the Marist program and the extra coverage found here is a timely and welcomed addition.
